Fluconazole belongs to a group of drugs called "antifungals". Fluconazole is used in dogs to treat infections caused by fungi. It is typically used for skin infections, fungus in the nailbeds, and more intense fungal infections including Blastomycosis and Histoplasmosis. It is related to Ketoconazole, but is able to more effectively cross the brain-blood barrier, making it more successful in treating fungal infections of the central nervous system. Fluconazole is also effective against ringworm, but is typically reserved for more serious infections. This is a long term drug and usually will be prescribed for 5 weeks to a few months

Fluconazole has fewer side effects than most other antifungals.

How It Works

Fluconazole works by inhibiting production of the fungal cell wall. This causes the fungus to be structurally inadequate so that it leaks and dies.

  • Oral medications often include prescriptions which contain ketoconazole, fluconazole, or itraconazole.
  • These medications often need to be administered for a long period of time: from 5 weeks to several months.
