  • To understand flea pills you must first understand the life cycle of a flea.
  • An adult flea, like one that might jump on your dog when it is outside or comes into contact with an infestation, can lay hundreds of eggs. But in order to develop those eggs she needs the nutrients found in your pet's blood.
  • After biting and feeding on your pet (causing the itching), she lays eggs. These eggs can be laid on your pet or in out of the way places where you pet stays (like in its bedding). Once the larva hatch, they feed on residue and waste until they become a mature flea, ready to find a mate and some blood.
  • Then the whole process starts again.
  • Not only do fleas cause itching and irritation for your dog, they can also cause problems such as tapeworms--an added worry and expense to treat.
  • So the best way to treat fleas is to stop this life cycle.

Nitempyram -

is used orally with dogs and cats to control fleas. After ingestion, it begins killing fleas within 30 minutes and kills all adult fleas within 4 hours. The effects of nitenpyram last approximately 24–48 hours. Nitenpyram is safe to use on puppies and kittens as young as four weeks old if they weigh at least 2 pounds (0.91 kg). Panting and excitement have been noted in cats within 2 hours of administration. In heavily infested animals, it can cause extreme itching as the fleas die.

Nitenpyram does not kill insect eggs and has no long-term activity. Thus, it is not effective as a long-term flea preventative. It is usually used to kill nymph and adult fleas quickly on an infested animal, and combined with a longer-term flea preventative like fipronil orlufenuron to prevent reinfestation. Nitempyram tablets are safe to use every other day, we recommend once a week until fleas have been irradicted.

Lufenuron:

USED to be the active ingredient in Program monthly flea pills. This was a first of it's kind oral medication designed to control fleas.

The medicine (which also came in liquid form) would not treat live fleas, however. It was designed to control the fleas buy making their eggs non viable. So living fleas would go through their life cycle but not be able to produce more fleas.

So while in some situations the flea medication could help with flea problems, it definitely had its limitations. Adding it to nitempyram increases the efficiency of Lufenuron and Nitempyram tablets can be used on an every other day ritual * we recommend every 5 days.

National Resource Defense council  recomendation:

"In many cases, fleas and ticks can be controlled with simple measures, such as brushing pets regularly with a flea comb while inspecting for fleas, vacuuming, and mowing frequently in areas where pets spend the most time outdoors. If you must resort other measures, flea control in pill form (such as lufenuron, nitenpyram, or spinosad) is safer than anything that leaves a residue on the fur."

Concerns and Cautions

In order for lufenuron to work, fleas must bite the pet, which is potentially a problem for pets who are allergic to fleas. For pets with flea bite allergy, lufenuron would best be combined with a product that actually kills fleas. Currently there is no flea product that can kill fleas before they bite.

Lufenuron must be given on a full stomach.

Pets must be at least 6 weeks of age to begin taking lufenuron.
