Flagyl -metronidazole 200 mg tablets (30 quantity)

Metrodinazole is used to treat gastrointestinal infections caused by bacteria or protozoa, particularly Giardia and Clostridial species. Metrobactin can also be used longer term in the management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
Metrobactin 200mg tablets can also be used to treat infections of the urinary or genital tract, oral cavity, throat or skin caused by anaerobic bacteria susceptible to metronidazole.
The product is suitable for use in both dogs and cats.

Indications for use, specifying the target species

Treatment of gastrointestinal tract infections caused by Giardia spp. and Clostridia spp. (i.e. C. perfringens or C. difficile).
Treatment of infections of the urogenital tract, oral cavity, throat and skin caused by obligate anaerobic bacteria (e.g. Clostridia spp.) susceptible to metronidazole.

Contraindications

Do not use in case of hepatic disorders.
Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients.

• Gram negative anaerobes ( Bacteroides, Fusobacterium, Porphyromonas).
• Gram positive aerobes (staphylococci )
•  Actinomyces  Actinomyces pyogens actinomyces viscosus 

 Principles of antimicrobial therapy

• Before commencing antimicrobial therapy a few important questions should be answered:
  • Is an antimicrobial agent really required?
    • Antimicrobial therapy should not be used indiscriminantly.
  • Which microorganisms are likely involved?
    • Appropriate sample.
    • Gram stain to guide therapy while awaiting culture results.
    • Culture: specify type of culture (aerobic, anaerobic, mycobacteria) at time of sample submission.

Considerations: 

There is such a wide range in metronidazole dosage for dogs because it takes into account many factors that will have the vet decide whether to go on the low end or high end of the scale. If it is a medical emergency, then the larger dose may be necessary. If the dog is also taking other antibiotics, then the low dosages are used. Ideally, the lowest possible dose is used in order to avoid bad side effects.
